James Comey was charged soon after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they planned to present several motions to dismiss the case before a trial, claiming the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's legal matter was first overseen by the original attorney, who stepped down under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his examination into a different opponent - the New York official - failed to bring criminal charges.

James Comey came across in good spirits as he entered the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his legal team and sharing humor. He was supported by his partner, his wife and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.

After listening to the judge read his legal protections and the two counts against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the court.

Previous Events

The former director was the head of the FBI from four years and was dismissed about several months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the moment, he was leading an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, Mr Comey caused a counter-response from liberal politicians when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was probing presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against the candidate were not filed, causing criticism from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys claim James Comey lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the legislative body by stating he had not permitted an individual at the agency to disclose to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also accuse James Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, obstruct and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Via social media James Comey published to his Instagram after he was accused, he stated he was innocent and alleged the former president of acting like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have been aware for years that there are consequences to opposing the former president," he said. "We will not live on our kneeling."
